About This Residency
Ey!Studio AiR is an international residency programme open to artists, filmmakers, curators, researchers, writers, musicians, designers, and other cultural practitioners of any nationality. The programme offers a self-directed residency format, as well as an optional curatorial accompaniment format for visual artists and filmmakers, allowing each resident to shape their experience according to their practice and needs. The residency provides time, space and context for research, experimentation and the development of new work. Residents also benefit from opportunities to share and increase the visibility of their work through Ey!Studio’s website and social media channels, audiovisual documentation of their project, and inclusion in the archive of resident artists. Visual artists and filmmakers have the option to participate in Ey!Studio’s annual group exhibition of resident artists, held a few months after the residency period. Ey!Studio takes care of the exhibition’s production, coordination, installation, curatorial text, graphic identity, and professional photo and video documentation. Selected works may also be considered for future exhibitions, art fairs and other curatorial projects developed by Ey!Studio, as well as for inclusion in the online gallery. Ey!Studio can also provide invitation or pre-selection letters to support applications for grants, scholarships, and external artist mobility programmes. This can help residents connect their Ey!Studio AiR experience with other international opportunities and professional development initiatives. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis throughout the year, as they are received. Residency places are allocated according to availability and based on the quality and relevance of the proposed project, the artist’s practice and professional trajectory, and the fit between the proposal and Ey!Studio’s programme. We recommend applying in advance, as places are confirmed progressively and may fill up before the requested residency period.
Experience & Atmosphere
Ey!Studio AiR is an international artist residency programme developed by Ey!Studio, a non-profit cultural association and independent art space located in Carabanchel, Madrid, one of the city’s emerging cultural districts. The programme provides time, space and context for research, experimentation and the development of contemporary creative projects, with a strong focus on the communication and visibility of residents’ work through Ey!Studio’s channels. The programme is open to visual artists, filmmakers, curators, researchers, writers, playwrights, musicians and other cultural and creative practitioners of any nationality and age. Projects from a wide range of disciplines and contemporary practices are welcome. The working languages are Spanish and English. Ey!Studio AiR offers two residency formats: **Live/Work Residency:** a residency with accommodation in private studios designed to function as both living and working spaces. **Studio Residency:** a residency without accommodation, for artists who prefer to arrange their own stay in Madrid. Within either format, residents can choose between an independent working mode, allowing them to develop their project autonomously throughout the residency, or a format with optional curatorial accompaniment. As part of Ey!Studio’s annual programme, visual artists and filmmakers have the opportunity to participate in an annual group exhibition featuring works developed during the residency. Participation is optional and the exhibition takes place a few months after the residencies have concluded, allowing time for the works to be selected and prepared. Artists whose work is selected leave the work on consignment for the exhibition. Ey!Studio takes care of the production, coordination and installation of the exhibition, as well as the curatorial text, graphic identity and professional photographic and video documentation. Selected works may subsequently be included in other curatorial projects developed by Ey!Studio, such as exhibitions and art fairs, as well as in Ey!Studio’s online gallery.
Mission & Goals
The purpose of Ey!Studio AiR is to provide artists and cultural practitioners with time, space and the right context to develop, research and experiment with new ideas and projects. The residency supports contemporary practices that benefit from a period of focused work, exploration and exchange, whether the project is at an early research stage, in development or moving towards a finished body of work. We welcome projects across different disciplines and approaches, including visual arts, filmmaking, curatorial research, writing, performance, music, interdisciplinary practices and other forms of contemporary creation. Rather than imposing a specific theme or methodology, Ey!Studio AiR encourages residents to develop their own lines of research and working processes. We are particularly interested in practices that engage with their surroundings, explore new perspectives and establish connections between artistic research, contemporary culture and the social context of Madrid.
