About This Residency

The Residency Program at Hangar encourages dialogue, exchange and experimentation. The program is non-prescriptive and process-based, allowing visiting artists to develop projects in response to their new environment or to conduct research benefiting from Lisbon's resources. The Residencies Program is firmly established in the Lisbon arts scene, promoting diverse cultures and practices through international and experimental projects. Hangar aims to act as a catalyst of experience in the connection between artists, researchers, and other artistic initiatives. It aims to encourage discussion of emerging contemporary art, stimulating the development of artistic and theoretical practices motivated by experimental and shared experiences. Hangar Residencies program developed from the experience of the coordinating team that has organized the Triangle workshop residency program in Portugal since 2009. This upcoming new residency in Lisbon gives the opportunity to non-Portuguese-based artists to live and work in Lisbon for a period of 1-3 months, but with the opportunity to stay longer.

Experience & Atmosphere

Hangar offers 7 living and work studios for residency, 4 studios with private bathroom and kitchen facilities and 3 studios on a co-working shared format and shared kitchen facilities. It is an Artistic Research Center located in Graça, Lisbon, an area known for its scenic views, local eateries, and vibrant street art. Artists have the option to participate in tours of galleries and curatorial presentations, and the residency culminates in an Open Day, where works from the residency are presented.

Mission & Goals

From the concept of unification of certain geographies, cultures and identities, Hangar seeks to organize and produce the development of cross-disciplinary artistic projects in the Visual Arts, integrating public presentations and taking Lisbon as the focus of intervention. Together with the Hangar Exhibitions and Participation Program, these international residencies encourage dialogue, exchange and experimentation. Through strategic partnerships in the international art world and institutions linked to cultural production and artistic research in various countries through the Triangle Network, the Hangar program aims to strengthen the existing exchange between Portugal, Europe, Africa and South America. Hangar includes several platforms for action, including a center of artistic residencies, studios for artists, an art education center, and exhibition space and public program.
